What Is Ana Baggage Allowance For The Economy?

When flying with All Nippon Airways, your carry-on allowance mostly depends on the aircraft size, particularly on domestic routes. Generally, ANA allows two carry-on items on all flights:

• 1 carry‑on bag 

• 1 personal item (such as a handbag, camera, or laptop)

As mentioned, the size of your carry-on baggage is largely determined by the aircraft's size. 

• Large aircraft (100 seats or more): The total dimensions must stay within 115 cm (55 x 40 x 25 cm).

• Small aircraft (fewer than 100 seats): The total dimensions must stay within 100 cm (45 x 35 x 20 cm).

Wondering how many bags you can check with All Nippon Airways? Keep in mind that your All Nippon Airways checked baggage depends on your cabin class and destination. This section breaks down All Nippon Airways’ checked baggage allowance, including weight, size, and piece limits. 

For Domestic Routes

If you’re flying soon, it's important to check which policy applies to your flights: before May 18 vs. those on or after May 19.

Until May 18, 2026

When flying domestically, make sure your checked bags stay within 203 cm (80 inches) in total dimensions. Economy Class passengers are eligible for 20 kg of free checked baggage, and Premium Class passengers up to 40 kg. There is no All Nippon Airways baggage limit on the number of bags, as long as the total weight does not exceed the applicable allowance. Star Alliance Gold members are eligible for an extra 20 kg free allowance.

After May 19, 2026

Starting May 19, 2026, the Japanese airline is making things more consistent by changing its domestic policy to the same piece-based system used for all Nippon Airways baggage allowance international routes. In other words, it's switching from a weight-based system to a piece-count system for all domestic flights. 

According to the new All Nippon Airways baggage allowance domestic rules, Economy class passengers can bring 2 bags (up to 23kg each), which means the total baggage allowance jumps to 46kg. It's the same for First Class passengers: the limit changes to 3 bags (up to 32kg each), which means up to 96 kg with the new policy. However, the maximum bag size will drop from 203 cm to 158 cm, so oversized suitcases won’t make the cut.

For International Routes

For international routes, ANA follows a “Piece System,” which means your allowance depends on how many pieces you bring. 

Note: Remember to make sure your bags fit within the aircraft's hold. According to the All Nippon Airways baggage policy for checked bags, each piece must stay within the 158 cm (62 in) limit (including the handles and wheels).

How Much Does ANA Charge For Extra Baggage?

Excess baggage fees on All Nippon Airways depend on whether you are flying within Japan or internationally, and whether your luggage exceeds the allowed number of items, weight, or dimensions.

International Routes

On any international flight, excess charges are based on these 3 zones:

• Zone 1: North, Central, and South America; Hawaii
• Zone 2: Europe, Africa, & the Middle East
• Zone 3: Asia & Oceania

If you're flying within the same zone, the fees are more affordable at $100, while the costs are double for flights across different zones, at $200.

On the other hand, overweight fees are flat rates regardless of the route. If your bags are between 23-32 kg, you'll have to pay a fee of $60, while those weighing 32–45 kg incur incredibly higher charges of $200. 

All Nippon Airways also applies a flat charge for bags exceeding 158 cm but not more than 292 cm in total linear dimensions of $200, whether you're flying within the same area or inter-area routes.

Domestic Routes

If your flight is a standalone domestic trip (Japan), the fees for extra baggage are lower.

• ANA charges ¥5,500 per additional checked piece beyond the free allowance.
• Bags that are slightly overweight (23-32 kg) are charged ¥1,100, while heavier items (32-45 kg) cost ¥5,500.
• Oversized items measuring 158-292 cm are also subject to a ¥5,500 surcharge.

ANA Rules For Sports Equipment And CPAP

All Nippon Airways baggage rules are generally accommodating of sports equipment. The airline normally counts your gear as part of your free checked bags (as long as it stays within 23 kg for Economy and 32 kg for Business).

• Under ANA’s checked baggage policy, oversize fees are waived for items with total linear dimensions up to 292 cm.

• This generous limit makes it much more affordable to travel with big sports equipment like surfboards, skis, and golf clubs.

• For really long gear (over 203 cm), however, you will need to contact ANA in advance to make sure they can fit in the cargo space, especially on smaller planes.

• Smaller sports gear is even easier: you can fly with it as cabin luggage as long as they comply with the standard carry-on dimensions of 55 × 40 × 25 cm.

• ANA also allows CPAP machines as a free personal item, and they don't count toward your carry-on limit.
