Overview of Aeromexico Airlines

Aeromexico, based in Mexico City, is the flag carrier airline of Mexico and has been operating since 1934. Its main hub is Mexico City International Airport, with subsidiary hubs in Hermosillo at General Mariano Escobedo International Airport and General Ignacio Pesqueira Garcia International Airport.
Aeromexico is a great option for air travellers heading to Mexico City or connecting through it to other popular destinations like Cancun or Cabo. If you're a SkyTeam or Delta member, you can earn and redeem miles on your flights.
Aeromexico Airlines offers air travellers 6 airfares: Basic Fare, Classic Fare, AM Plus, Premier Light, Premier, and Premier One. Each comes with a specific baggage allowance for carry-ons and checked bags, which we'll find out right below.

Aeromexico tickets include 1 carry-on and 1 personal item. The dimension limit for carry-on is 55 cm x 40 cm x 25 cm (21.5 x 15.7 x 10 inches).
Regarding personal items, what Aeromexico will accept on board are fanny packs, umbrellas, laptops, purses, briefcases, etc. The dimensions of the personal item are not specified, but according to the airline, it must fit under the seat in front of the passenger.
Compared to other airlines, Aeromexico's weight allowance is quite strict. If you're boarding with a Basic fare, the combined weight of your carry-on and personal item shouldn't exceed 10 kg (22 lbs).
The airline permits you to bring larger or heavier carry-on items if you book a more premium cabin. Classic, AM Plus, and Chase Premier passengers can board with up to 33 lbs of combined luggage. On any Aeromexico international flights, however, all passengers are treated equally, with 22 lbs combined per passenger.
If your carry-on baggage or personal item exceeds the maximum amount and size permitted, they will be deemed checked baggage or excess baggage, and you will be charged an extra fee.
Carry-On Baggage Allowance For Infants & Children
Aeromexico enables customers to carry two complimentary items inside the cabin, which can be a stroller, bassinet, or diaper bag. Furthermore, each client receives free trolley check-in at the gate.
Passengers travelling to international destinations are permitted one additional item of checked luggage in addition to a stroller or bassinet weighing no more than 23 kg (50 lb) in weight or measuring 115 cm (45 inches) in size.
Aeromexico Checked Baggage Allowance Policy
Standard Checked Bag Allowance & Fees
On Domestic Flights (Mexico):
Basic and Classic Fare on domestic Aeromexico flights don't have any free checked bags. However, you can still have the option to purchase 20 kg or 25 kg for your checked bag.
AM Plus fare passengers are allowed one free checked bag of 25 kg (50 lb), with a linear dimension of 158 cm (62 inches). The checked bag allowance for Premier and Primer Light fares is two free checked bags of 32 kg, with the same linear dimension of 158 cm. The checked bag allowance for Premier One is not applicable to flights within Mexico.
On US Flights:
Aeromexico doesn't offer any free checked bags for either Basic, Classic or AM Plus. You can still pay for 25kg of checked bags if you need to check a suitcase or two.
While Premier Light fares are not applicable on this route, Premier and Premier One tickets are allowed for 2 free checked bags of 32 kgs, with a linear dimension of 158 cm. Each of these classes still has the choice to buy an extra 25 kg if they have excess luggage to check-in.

Excess Baggage Fees
Aeromexico charges the same fee for the first checked bag (15kg) across all routes. However, starting from checked bags that weigh 20-25kg, the baggage fees will be widely different. If you're flying on European routes, you'll pay more for the same checked bag.
Also, you may want to consider buying your checked bags ahead of time. This not only helps you avoid long lines at the airport but also saves some bucks for your trip.

Sport Equipment
Sport equipment is considered as special baggage on Aeromexico flights and is subject to extra baggage fees.
Golf bags, hunting equipment, bikes, scuba diving equipment, etc. costs $75 for domestic flights and $150 for international flights. These fees can go up to $83 and $165 for domestic and international routes respectively during high season.
There are also some restrictions in place for your sports equipment. Your items shouldn't be more than 32 kg (70 lb). The maximum length for each piece is:
-
204 cm (80 inches) in narrow cabins (such as the B737 700, B737 800, E190, Boeing B737 MAX 8, Boeing B737 MAX 9),
-
294 cm (115 inches) in larger ones (B787-8, B787-9).
Passengers can swap their checked baggage for sports equipment - one for one - at no extra fee, as long as the items comply with the weights & measurements. Beware that this doesn't apply to travel classes that don't include any free checked bags. An exception is made for tennis rackets, which can be checked in as luggage at no extra cost.
Musical Instrument
The fees for musical instruments are the same as sports items: $75 for domestic flights and twice for international ones. For musical items that don't go over the max linear surface of 1.15m (3.77 ft) (L+W+H), you can board with them as carry-on luggage as well. If not, you can swap them with your eligible checked bag (not applicable for Canada, Mexico, and US routes).
Medical Devices And Medications
Are you flying with a portable oxygen concentrator (POC)? As long as your device comes with a Physician’s Statement and you notify the airline beforehand, then there would be no problem to board with a POC.
Wheelchairs with non-spillable wet batteries are also allowed onboard, but those with spillable ones are off the list (they need to be checked). You can also travel with medical aids like crutches, syringes, and orthopaedic devices without checking them into the hold.

Tips to Avoid Baggage Fees When Flying Aeromexico
1. Travel Light with a Carry-On
This obvious strategy is hard for many people, but it's the most effective once you nail it. Aeromexico allows you one carry-on bag and one personal item. If you manage to make the most of this allowance, you won't have to pay expensive fees for excess luggage.
Fly to your dream destination hassle-free with the right backpack
When it comes to overweight luggage, the culprit is more likely to be your travel bags themselves, rather than those spare flip-flops or swimsuits you plan to bring. It's time to switch from your old suitcases to a more lightweight yet efficient backpack to maximise the weight.
At CabinZero, we design our backpacks based on airliner sizes to offer products that match your airline’s allowance. You won't need to double-check with the airline's gauze. Click here for backpacks that fit neatly into Aeromexico overhead cabins or those that go perfectly under the seat of Ryanair, British Airways, American Airlines, and many more carriers around the world.
2. Sign Up for Aeromexico Rewards
By joining the Aeromexico Rewards you can enjoy more perks when flying with the airline. Members of Gold, Platinum and Titanium tier levels are eligible for one extra piece of the same weight and dimension, depending on their travel class.
Pay for A Premium Fare
While Aeromexico's main cabin and basic economy fares don't offer a complimentary checked bag, premium cabin fares are usually more generous. If you're flying on a Clase Premium fare, you normally enjoy at least one checked bag for free.
When you're on a long trip away from home and know you finally checked a bag or two, it's worth considering upgrading to a premium fare. Perks like larger seats, priority check-in and boarding also make your long-haul flight more tolerable.
Get A Co-Branded Credit Card
Signing up for an airline credit card is also a great way to get around baggage fees. Credit cards like Santander Aeroméxico Infinite and The Platinum Card American Express® Aeroméxico come along with 1 additional piece of luggage, with the same size and weight applied to the travel class you’ve purchased.
For members of loyalty programs of certain SkyTeam business partners, like Elite and Elite Plus, they also receive 1 additional piece of luggage. Beware that terms and conditions are applied, so click here for more details.
Get A Travel Credit Card
If you're not a loyal Aeromexico flyer, you can consider getting a general credit card instead. Chase Sapphire Reserve card, for example, offers cardholders $300 in travel purchases each year, which also applies to baggage fees. As this Mexican airline is also an Amex transfer partner, you can also consider the American Express® Gold Card, which lets you transfer your hard-earned points with ease.
FAQs
1. How Many Checked Bags Are Allowed On Aeromexico International Flights?
Depending on your destinations and fares, passengers can bring 1-2 checked bags for free on Aeromexico international flights. Basic tickets don't normally come with a free checked bag, as it’s the cheapest and least flexible category.
If you know you have some baggage to check beforehand, we recommend upgrading to higher tiers like Premier or Premier One. These fares come with a more generous allowance (normally 2 free pieces) and more weight (32 kg). After all, international flights are normally long-haul flights, with more to pack and less to leave behind.
2. How Strict Is Aeromexico On Carry-On Size?
All carry-ons boarding any Aeromexico plane should not exceed 55 cm x 40 cm x 25 cm (21.5 x 15.7 x 10 inches) to ensure it’ll fit into the overhead cabin without eating much space from other passengers. While many flyers agree that Aeromexico rarely checks carry-ons for size, we believe that you shouldn't take the risk of bringing oversized items.
There's still a chance that the gate agent will ask to put your luggage into the gauze, and if it doesn't fit in, you risk paying for your costly mistakes. Some would argue that the gauze still has some wiggle room but we'd like to say that it’s not much.
3. What Is The Carry-On Liquid Size For Aeromexico?
Liquid policy for Aeromexico is just like those universally applied for all airlines around the world for nearly two decades: no more than 100ml (3.4 ounces). You should pack your liquids in a clear, transparent one-quart bag so they can be easily screened through the checkpoint.
4. Does A Backpack Count As A Personal Item In Aeromexico?
Yes, a backpack qualifies as a personal item when flying with Aeromexico. You can also swap in a handbag or briefcase if you wish, as long as your “personal item” can fit securely under the seat in front of you.
5. Does Aeromexico Am Plus Include A Checked Bag?
Yes, AM Plus does include a free checked bag, along with 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item. Your checked bag shouldn't be heavier than 25 kg or larger than 158 linear cm in size. When you’re paying for the upgrade to an AM Plus, you’re paying for more inches of legroom, priority check-in, boarding, and better in-flight experiences.
6. What Items Are Prohibited On Aeromexico Flights?
It's common sense to avoid packing red-flag items like explosives, weapons and flammable liquids for any flight if you don't want to get yourself into trouble. There are also some special items that fall as “prohibited” on Aeromexico flights that you should be aware of before packing:
-
Samsung Galaxy Note 7
-
15-inch MacBook Pro (Models on sale from September 2015 and February 2017)
-
Lighters (electric and gas)
-
Smart Bags (allowed into the cabin if they’re equipped with removable batteries)
-
Rechargeable and non-rechargeable Lithium Batteries
